Preventing heart disease before it starts
The Victorian Heart Institute is dedicated to more than just treating cardiovascular disease – it is focused on preventing it before it starts. Our mission is to translate cutting-edge research into actionable strategies that protect at-risk individuals and the broader community from heart disease and its long-term consequences.
A holistic, evidence-based approach
Effective prevention requires more than lifestyle advice. We take an integrated approach, drawing on the latest advances in basic science, epidemiology, clinical trials, healthcare delivery, and community co-development. Our work spans key domains, including:
- Risk factors such as blood pressure, body weight, cholesterol and blood glucose
- Nutrition, microbiome, and physical activity
Sleep, mental health, and cognitive function - Ageing and health literacy
- Climate change and pollution
- Prevention of heart disease due to cancer treatment or pregnancy complications
- Overall wellbeing and social determinants of health
Supporting those already diagnosed
Prevention doesn’t stop at early intervention. People living with heart disease face the highest risk of future complications. That’s why secondary prevention – reducing recurrence and improving quality of life – is a critical part of our work. We’re developing innovative solutions to support long-term management and recovery.
Collaborating for impact
As a multidisciplinary institute, the Victorian Heart Institute works closely with hospitals, clinicians and allied health professionals, and researchers across several fields, to deliver research-driven, coordinated health solutions.
By bridging expertise across medical fields, we aim to maximise the impact of preventative cardiology and improve long-term heart health outcomes.
